NaNoWriMo 2016 – Day 1 – 5057

Well today was a nice, productive day. I can’t guarantee I’ll always run this hot on the first day of NaNo or any day after for that matter, but I’m off to a great start.

race-start

I peppered in no less than five writing sessions today, though most were less than 20 minutes at a time. I felt like this was the best way to knock out my word count and get through the ideas I had flooding my brain.

5am – 500+ words
6:30am – 200 words
7:30am – 500+ words
2pm – 800 words
5:30pm – 1000 words
9pm – 2000+ words

Something like that anyway. This year I’m not actively tracking individual sessions and only worrying about the end of day word count, but I wanted to remind myself that I don’t need to set down for a long period in order to churn out some solid production.

And as far as the outline goes, I have 6 bullets for the opening “scene” and this worked out to be those 6 bullets. While I would have preferred to get over 6k for those 6 bullets, I’ll certainly take 5k.

I had to go back a couple of times today and add more detail as I glossed over some things that I didn’t want to gloss over. I spent some time on the details and really fleshed out the scene – so this was a big improvement for me. I don’t like backtracking during NaNo, but if I am going to get anywhere close to 100k, I need to fill in those holes as I see them rather than waiting until the end.

Today was a bit of a cheat day. I had taken today off of work for some other plans. This enabled me to write at times that are not normal (7:30am and 2pm really – I start work earlier usually, but there’s nothing saying I have to), but I could have gotten much more done first thing.

All in all, a very good first day (my best ever technically). Looking forward to day 2!
