NaNo Prep 2016

Feeling a little apprehensive about my tentative goal of 100k this year, I set out to prepare my novel some. So today, during my son’s basketball clinic, I took along a notepad and pen and started taking down notes about whatever came to mind.

For three of the threads, I have worked out the very basics of the characters and the setting behind them. Since each thread will essentially be a story unto itself, they will have very distinct characters and settings (though the personalities of some of the characters will align with the characters above or below them in the “pecking” order).

For two of the threads, this was all I really got to do. For the third though, I started thinking about what makes the characters tick. What are their wants? What do they like about their lives? What do they not have that they think they want? Also, I jotted down some bits about the physical surroundings – what their houses look like, who they live with and what the family life is like for each of them (these three characters are all adolescents).

In an hour plus, I had about two pages of notes handwritten, and while it was disorganized and very raw, it was something to help me see where these characters were coming from.

The characters in this thread will be “playing” the characters from the thread below them. In that respect, their personalities will be transferred over (and even some of the physical traits if that is the way they designed their personas).

The top tier has the least in common with the other threads though it will be a part of the lowest tier as well. These will need careful work when I get to them. For now – they are really just names and ranks that line up, mostly, with the roles in Chess.
