Write Now prompt (Sept 2, 2016)

Working on another prompt from Today’s Author:

The car growled and shook, then slowly came to a halt.

“Great. We’re stranded!”

I stared at the steering wheel, dumbfounded, shocked, unable to process. Out the windshield of my 1991 Ford Escort, the road stretched on until it met with the horizon it seemed. Lined with low trees, scrubby bushes, and tall telephone poles, it betrayed no signs of civilization for as far as I could see. Stranded didn’t even begin to tell about our situation.

“I told you that the car would never make it. I told you…” Andrea trailed off in hopelessness.

Finally, I was able to blink and tear my eyes from the wheel. I turned toward my passenger – my fourteen year old sister – and tried to form the words. All that came out was a strangled set of unintelligible syllables.

Andrea pulled out her phone, fiddled with it for a moment and then thrust it back into her purse, frustrated.

“No signal?” I asked, knowing the answer.

She nodded.

I popped the hood of the car, and stepped out of the car. A wave of heat enveloped me as the door opened. Andrea groaned behind me as she felt it as well. I stepped out and closed the door as quickly as I could. The cooler air inside wouldn’t last long, but the longer the better.

Steam was curling away from the radiator as I stepped around to the front. Dan, my car, was prone to overheating on really hot days and as I felt the sweat pool on my eyebrows, I knew that today was one of those days. I kicked the tire in front of me with frustration. Gazing down the road behind us, the road was bare of cars, trucks or other potential saviors. No one around for what was probably miles. What could I do to get us out of this?

It was too hot to walk, especially without some water. The convention where we were headed was still a two hour drive ahead of us. We’d surely see someone else on the road by then, but who knows when.
