Outlining

To Outline (v): to pass one’s day at a coffee shop, thinking and writing about how you think your NaNoWriMo story will go in 40 days.

This weekend, I spent a good amount of time working on the outline for my project for November. I can’t say I have the whole outline done, because I’m not even 50% of the way through it, but I did make progress on it, and that is what I was looking for on a Saturday when I didn’t have any particular other plans.

The outline covers three major parts – the three “acts” of the story and has the beginning scenes for each of the first three chapters in the first two acts. The way the story runs (in my head) right now, the first and second acts are concurrent and build into the 3rd act when the two main protagonists combine their efforts.

It is just a plan of course, and it would not be the first time I toss it by the wayside if I can’t make headway on it in November.

So that was my Saturday and it was good.

I thought I might get some more done today, but that plan got thrown out the window pretty early.

I also finished Dangerous Games: How to Play (Matt Forbeck) the other day, so that’s another item off of my list. My wife picked up Ender in Exile (Orson Scott Card), so I’ve got a new series to work on…

Best of all, I was talking with the kids about my outline today (conceptually – not the specifics of it), and that got them all talking about what they wanted to write (or what they are writing). I love that they end up distracting me from my writing with their writing. It is a distraction I will always welcome.

I can’t say I’m good with it, but at least I try at it occasionally. The same goes for my writing in general…
