NaNoWriMo 2014 – Day 9: 2567

Good morning!

Good morning!

I took a bit of a vacation this weekend and drove with my partner up to Maine for some rest, relaxation, and work. She needed to catch up on some things and I needed to focus on my writing and we both knew that staying home would enable us to distract ourselves from our goals. So we drove up, enjoyed the weekend and enjoyed the sunrise.

Today I managed to sit down in two separate sessions. We had gone for a walk along the beach in the early morning, but had a few hours before checkout, so I wrote the next scene of 1200 words in that time while also packing up and making sure we didn’t forget anything. Oh and I got distracted, but I’ll address that below.

In the second session, after all the kids were tucked in bed, I wrote another scene (1300 words) that I was somewhat dreading. It could use some more powerful writing in there, but I think it will do its job.

On to distractions… I was about to search for “protoceratops” this morning in order to find out just how big a “really big one” would be, but before I searched, helpful Firefox put this as the second option:

protoceratops griffin

Now since I love a good strange topic, I went ahead and searched on that instead of my original plan. What I found was a couple of sites indicating that the origins of the griffin in various myths might have come from early discoveries of the protoceratops. I can’t speak to the validity of the individual sites, but after seeing two sites on the subject, it seemed entirely plausible. (site 1: Dinosaurs: facts and fiction; site 2: wikipedia). I’ll have to read more on the subject just for curiosity’s sake, but for now, I’m content in taking the idea and running with it.

As a result, guess how my story is going to shift in the coming days… 🙂
