Lake Whitehall ride

I promise I’ll get back to some writing-oriented posts soon. In the meantime though, here’s another ride I did with the Ashland Bike Club.

Two weeks ago, on Memorial day, I had my first lengthy ride of 25 miles with the club. Today, was originally looking quite daunting as it featured a fair few hills in the first half that looked substantial. The most impressive was a 9% grade over by Lake Whitehall. However, I found this ride much easier than the one on Memorial day. I’d love to say it is because I am much more in shape than I was two weeks ago (which is certainly possible), but I think it might also have to do with the fact that most of the severe hills were in that first half; the second half was a relatively calm, easy ride back into Ashland.

ABC - Lake Whitehall

That map doesn’t show the grade obviously – but here’s the profile with the 9% grade at the 10.2 mile mark:

ABC - Lake Whitehall - gradeYou can see pretty quickly though that the first part had the big (or at least steeper) hills to work with and the way back was much more tame. The full set of directions and the maps and info from above are available here.

We started off around 9am at the Ashland Stone Park and returned around 12:30pm with a decent rest at the boat launch point (marked with the “i” on the map above. I was pretty winded at that point, but knowing that I was more than halfway at that point helped and I certainly gained a second wind at about mile 17 and cruised along to the end.

We did differ from the map above at the very end. Instead of turning off at around mile 20, we just returned the rest of the way straight to make it a total of 22.4 miles overall.

The Ashland Bike Club also offered a second, shorter ride today which is highlighted here.
