Inspiration

I draw a lot of my inspiration from my kids. Selfish as it may seem, I want them to be proud of their dad and ultimately, the only way I feel I can do that is to do the best I can. That said, I am very aware of the world around me. When I have a camera on hand (or someone with a camera is with me…), I am not opposed to pulling over on the side of the road and taking a few pictures for later.

nh house

This house was one I passed while I was up in New Hampshire for a friend’s wedding a few years back. It caught my eye because it is not a cookie-cutter house and has distinctive features about it that just fascinated me. For example:

Stained glass windows. Now – this might have been some religious place instead of a house, but it didn’t have any features that I identified it in any way that I knew as a church or temple or otherwise. But as a house, I don’t know how many people would put that much stained glass in. Simply beautiful regardless of the building’s purpose.

Similarly, stone walls are a bit of an interesting thing to me. And when I say stone walls, I mean those walls that are constructed without any sort of binding agent and yet are beautiful in their refined organization. This stone wall had a few pieces that had fallen out. Why had they fallen out? I’d like to say some dragon had burst out from within, but more likely it was some other kind of rodent…

Anyway, I was spending some time looking through some old photos today, so I figured I’d share a few. I was good though, I didn’t start looking through them until I had already worked for some time on Jacoby Figurine tonight. I’m pretty far off from where the first draft had been, but it needed that kind of departure in order to get it into a more reasonable shape. I’m taking it slow as I add though so I can make sure it really fits the tone of the story and so that each scene has a purpose.
