Add Water, Mix

Canoeing on the Ashland Resevoir, 2009

Finally got myself back to working on Jacoby Figurine today. The last time I did anything substantial was about a week ago, but as long as I get back to it, that is the important part to me.

The scene I’m currently adding involves a background character investigating something that will ultimately lead the bad guys back to his place and result in him getting murdered and his home torched. I didn’t have it in the first draft at all, so this is all new territory for me, but adds some much needed depth to the character, who is both the main character’s mentor and employer. When he dies later in the story, my sole reader mentioned that she had no emotional connection to him at all because he was such a minor character. I’m hoping that this depth will give him that level of importance and also explain a little more about the mysteries associated with the figurine.

In writing this scene, I realized I had so little about this character that I didn’t even know if he was tall or short, thin or fat, average all around, hair color or eye color. In fact, other than a name, he really didn’t have anything.

Character development is pretty much at the top of my list of skills that I need to develop.

At times, it can be overwhelming when I realize the skills I need to develop. It will all come in time. Nice photo! Happy New Year!

I agree. It is just something to work on of course, and I can accept that I have things to learn. I just want to be further along in my skills than I am.

Happy New Year to you as well.
