Separation Anxiety

Orchards are arranged in neat rows. My story is now separated in the same way.

Orchards are arranged in neat rows. My story is now separated in the same way.

The picture above was taken one year when I went apple picking with my kids. I love looking down between the rows of trees. It makes me feel like I am looking into the vastness of space, despite the rows making it a very narrow path.

In some ways, this is how I feel Jacoby Figurine is now. When I initially wrote it in Microsoft Word, I was scared to move things around because I only had 5 loose “scenes” that had been identified. Manipulating scenes in Word is painful. However, when I purchased WriteWay Professional after last year’s NaNoWriMo, I was pleased with how it let me organize my story and so it wasn’t long before I brought Jacoby Figurine into that program to be more easily modified.

For the most part, WriteWay and Word work the same way when I am actively writing. I only need the space to write when I am writing and it is easy enough to open several windows if I need to have an outline on hand or a couple of notes. However, the organization of WriteWay allows me to have much more extensive notes.

Adding new scenes is also easy. No need to add in page breaks or sections – WriteWay handles all of that for me.

Anyway – adding a new scene tonight was my main focus and I’m pretty happy with how it is going so far. This will help setup a rather tragic event later on in the story better and also reveal a little more of a human side to the main characters’ employer. He is set up to be a good guy, but he had such a bit part before that he really wasn’t all that important.

I’ve never heard of WriteWay, I’ll have to check it out. Good luck with your story!

It is a pretty strong Windows-only program with features comparable to Scrivener (which is the one I was looking at beforehand because I know so many mac-users who swear by it). Unfortunately, the windows-port of Scrivener was still in beta last year and I wanted something useful right then.
