Distractions

Probably the most prevalent issue I deal with is distractions. It is very easy to let something take my attention. Particularly when I haven’t really given myself over to my writing for the day, it is so easy to just drop it to do something else.

I sat down to work on Jacoby Figurine around 5pm today. Writing and editing when the kids are awake is always dicey, but everyone was busy and I knew I had a good half hour before I needed to start getting dinner ready. I opened the book, added a quotation mark I had missed last night and my five-year old came to me looking for a game.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get back to writing until the kids went to bed and then I made the unfortunate decision to work a little more on my Christmas presents. I was pretty close to being done and now I basically am. However, the price to be paid there (other than the money anyway) is that I used up all of my writing time.

I know I can be easily distracted though. This is why, when I write, I make sure the television is off. And as much as I don’t want to get distracted by my kids, I will take that distraction every day of the week and twice on Sundays. In other words, I don’t regret a minute of it.
