Day 8: Goal 1667, Actual 1734

Have you ever had one of those days where your narrative voice went utterly and completely unreliable? I’m not saying little things like “oh I accidentally said his eyes were blue when they were really brown.” I mean the narrator has just realized he has lied to you for the past eleven thousand words. Seriously, I can’t trust this guy at all and he’s my main character.

I’ve written a suspense like this before. I quite enjoyed my short “Dear Timothy” story. I regret losing it, but I’ve been unable to reproduce it since. The narrative voice in that little 2400 word story was creepy. Very creepy. And I enjoyed writing every word of it.

My narrator here is decidedly less creepy though. He just realized though that he had been telling lies all along. There are grains in there that might be truth, but distorted within the lens that he was seeing through, so nothing was making sense.

And of course, this was definitely not where I thought the story was going. Yet here it is. On the edge of a precipice and he dives straight off the edge and heads straight to the sky. Yeah – that kind of unreliable. Where you question even gravity.

I don’t know where the story is going to go tomorrow. I can safely say that since I killed off one of the characters, it really has taken a turn for the I-don’t-know-where-we’re-going-but-we’re-going-to-get-there-anyway-whether-you-like-it-or-not…

Have a good night. I hope I sleep better than my narrator. Clearly he needs a good night’s rest.
