Day 6: Goal 1667, Actual 1807

There are some nights that I sit with the laptop in front of me and the story before me and I don’t write a damned thing. I’m not a political person, but I had turned on the election coverage for a few minutes and by the time I turned it off, I was immersed in it. As a result, when I decided to write, my mind was on politics and not on my story.

Sometimes, this is the kind of block I get. I want to write, but I’m off thinking about something else. As a result, I sat for close to an hour without writing word one.

However, I do have the conviction to get this story finished. At this point I am just shy of 10,000 (which is where I should be after 6 days), and I have a good idea of where the story is going. Of course, by the end of tonight’s session I just killed someone off in the story. It’s funny, I don’t remember this story having a death, but BAM – there it is. Someone getting escorted out on a stretcher…

I blame the election day for it. Clearly I was so distraught about it that I just had to kill a character off.

Okay, enough about politics.

When I did get writing, I wrote at the same clip I’ve been at for the past few days. I’m averaging about 38 WPMs, so knocking out my daily goal is about 45 minutes. Small sample size, but since I was running at about 30 WPMs last year, this just means I should be done faster. If all things go well that is.

I am kind of glad I killed off a character. I’m not sure yet who it is – right now it could be some nameless face in the background that is going to change the main characters’ lives forever. It could be the love interest in the story too – she’s been put in the unenviable position that it would be convenient for her to die.

I’m sure it will sort itself out by tomorrow though. Usually they do.
