Day 5: Goal 1667, Actual 1733

Today was one of those days where I just went from one thing to the next and didn’t really stop. Woke up – got the kids off to school – started working – at 5 I ran to the store to get food to make for dinner – made dinner – got the kids in the shower while I picked up around the apartment – got the kids to bed and then I sat down to write.

And like the methodically busy day, my writing was fast and without pause today.

Some days, I take a few breaks in order to get to my goal for the day. Even on those, I try to get a solid 5-600 words written in a spurt. Today I didn’t even stop to grab a sip of the drink next to me until I was over 1400 in and at that point, I decided to finish up before rewarding myself with something liquid. Since I had been typing so effectively already, the remaining 300 was done in relatively no time.

I love days like this.

The story is coming along nicely. I was originally using a very small scene from my own life as inspiration for the fictional elements, but as it is developing, I’ve found myself twisting in a few other random bits that are not fiction to go with the rest. I find it is both invigorating to relive some of these parts of my life and retelling it in a way that makes sense for the story and in a way that is just a little more extreme, a little more emotional, a little more umpph.
Since I’ve never done something like this before, I’m happy that it is developing well and I hope that I don’t end up hitting the wall at 20-30k like I have the past two years. If I do, so be it of course. I will power through, like I did both other years.

So to my few readers out there – what do you do to keep yourself writing from day to day?
